Visas and entry into Hungary, hotels, events, online registration form for companies
I. Visa-free entry
1. Certain categories of passport-holders are allowed to travel to Hungary without the obligation to obtain an entry visa beforehand. The list of national travel documents entitling for visa-free entry is available at the Hungarian
Foreign Ministry’s website:
http://konzuliszolgalat.kormany.hu/visa-waiver-agreements
2. Foreigners in possession of a valid uniform (“Schengen”) visa may enter Hungary without prior administrative procedures. Schengen visas generally entitle for 90 days of stay in any six-month period – without available days left, however, the foreigner still has to apply for a visa.
3. A Residence Permit issued by one of the Schengen Member States, together with a valid travel document, also entitles its holder for a visa-free travel to Hungary.
II. Obtaining a visa
In other cases like the above, travellers have to apply for a visa at the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate/-General in the country of the applicant’s nationality or legal residence. In countries where the Republic of Hungary does not maintain such a representation, applications can be submitted at another Schengen Member State’s mission acting on behalf of Hungary.
Contact information to our partner States’ missions in these countries can be found on the Ministry’s website (“Visa issuance on behalf of Hungary”):
http://konzuliszolgalat.kormany.hu/visa-issuance-on-behalf-of-hungary
If Hungary does not have its own visa-issuing representation in a country or territory and is neither represented by another Schengen Member State there, applications can be lodged at any of the Hungarian Embassies or Consulates/-General located in other countries but out of the territory of the Schengen Member States.
Applicants should present themselves personally at the competent consular office. Together with all Schengen member countries, Hungary also started to collect biometric data – photo and fingerprints – in certain countries (North, Western and Central Africa, Middle East, Gulf countries, Turkey, Moldova) as integral part of the visa procedure. To avoid long waiting time, applicants are advised to contact the consular office in advance and request a specific time for submitting their applications.
When applying for a visa, please consider that the procedure, according to the 810/2009/EC Regulation, may take up to 15 calendar days! Information on the procedure and other visa-related details can be obtained from the visa-issuing diplomatic or consular mission.
Passports should have been issued within 10 years and be valid for at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from Hungary (or other Schengen Member State, in case of consecutive travels). They should also contain at least two blank pages.
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry’s website provides further details on the visa procedure (“How to apply for a visa”): http://konzuliszolgalat.kormany.hu/en
